One of the most commonly overlooked animal abuse traditions is turtle racing. Hundred of these turtle races are happening across the southern US, mostly during festivals such as the 4th of july celebration. The first problem arises due to the capture and relocation of native turtle species. These turtles are taken from their native territories, crammed together in inhumane enclosures, and then disposed of haphazardly at the closest pond once the race is over, rarely returned to the exact place they were found. Many turtles are imprinted on their native range, and moving them to an unfamiliar environment leads to fatige, famine, and death. The second problem is that people do not take care of them before and after the race. Many people keep them in unsanitary conditions, with improper heating, humidity, and food. They are crowded together and easily pass bacterial and parasitic infections from one to the next. If they're not killed by disease or dehydration, then the abuse they're subject to certainly might. These turtles are forced to race across hot asphalt, and are often dropped, causing shell fractures. In many places, kids are taught to decorate their shells by painting them or hot gluing them, which interferes with basking, can extremely painful, and lead to infection. Yes, thats right, turtles can feel everything done to their shell. Although it may look innocent, this tradition has serious consequences. Many species that are used are threatened, and their populations will continue to decline until we outlaw this archaic practice. #turtle #turtles #boxturtle #redearedslider #reptile #reptiles #zoo #exotics #wildlife #rescue #conservation #animals #pets #nature #vet #vetmed #veterinarian #veterinary #medicine #veterinarymedicine #veterinaria #medical #doctor #premed #prevet #vettech #dvm #wearfigs #scrublife
