Yea that man doesn’t not know enough about vocal pedagogy. There are voice types that are used for classical operatic or bel canto style singing but that only really applies when you are a soloist. In

True operatic contraltos are extremely rare but in choral singing alto is the part you're singing not your natural vocal range 😳. Opera uses your full trained range and choral singing usually doesn't

most of my high school choir was alto... and like 10 of us were semi-forced sopranos...

One time, my musical and drama theatre groups had a performance together where we had to divide up into a 4 part choir. Since we were low on boys, they put me in with the bases because I could go low

Wait what?! I've always learned that altos are the low females, and sopranos are high females.
Tenores and Altos are about the same range, but different genders?

He had a really weird way of expressing it, but it's sort of true? Physiological contraltos are extremely rare. But "alto" is a part of a choir, not a physiological description of your voice

Sounds like he was doing a terrible job teaching if he didn't know you physically couldn't sing those songs. Like his statement about altos is wrong - but it also is a failing from a teaching standpoint to not have any idea of what your students can do.

I sing in a school choir and we have 20 female altos and 4 female sopranos including me (I'm a mezzo but still) so idk how altos don't exist

Mary, the opera singer on here, has talked about “alto” not being an opera term. But then your music teacher should have been dividing between soprano and mezzo soprano.

Voice type and choir part are different labels. You can be an alto in choir but a soprano voice type. An alto VT depends on range and vocal tone (Tracy Chapman).

I usually sang with altos in our choir because I am absolutely not a soprano. but sometimes I joined the few male voices we had because that section needed more and I can't even hit some alto notes.

I was an alto naturally. I was capable of hitting notes in all 5 octaves, but my natural octave is, and always has been alto.

Contraltos are rare. Operatic contraltos are the voice part that you rarely see. Alto lines in choir are written for lower female voices (and sung primarily by mezzos. I’m gonna guess you’re a mezzo)

I had the lowest voice in women's choir (until they dropped that class) and not only was I labeled as an alto, but I sang the men's part in any song that had one. I'm feckin proud of that.

He must’ve confused choral altos and contraltos. Alto is a very reasonable voice part for someone AFAB. AFAB can be tenors without T sometimes. Contraltos are rare, but they definitely exist.

I had a choir teacher insist that the women not sing too low because it was bad for their voices. She'd have the men sing the really low alto notes. I wonder if this is just an outdated idea.

and yet I, a capable soprano, was cast as a pirate crew member in our rendition of Pirates of Penzance because 75% of the boys in choir couldn't hit a lot of the lower notes in the chorus lines

I am so floored by this. I sorry you had such an experience where your teacher refused to actually listen to your range. Every choir I've been in has females singing the alto of SATB.

Same. all girls were soprano and all the boys were alto, tenor, and tenor. I didn't last long in chior. I hated singing until just a few year ago when I started singing in my lower register.

I know why this is! there are 2 categorization of female voices. for solo operatic singing: soprano. mezzosoprano, and contralto. for choral singing: usually soprano, mezzo, alto. so alto is really...
