Have a favorite native wildflower? Learning about local plants introduces you to your ecosystem's unique residents. Exotic plants have made native ones seem unfamiliar, despite their presence around us. Let's explore some native wildflowers that could catch your eye. You can find these and other flowers in our regional native wildflower mixes, offering a window to more local species. Eschscholzia californica var. maritima(Coastal Poppy)California poppies must be the best know california native, but can you spot any of its subspecies? You can ID Maritima by its yellow petals with brighter orange center. The compact bluish feathery foliage forms a tight mound. It’s deer resistant, drought tolerant self sows and get this… unlike most california poppies can stick around as a perennial and come back year after year. Phacelia tanacetifolia(lacy phacelia), captivates with its curly tendrils, fascinating bees and humans alike. Recommended by the Xerxes Society for beneficial insects, it's an early bloomer aiding ground bees. Collinsia heterophylla(Purple Chinese Houses) , another Xerxes-recommended plant, supports pollinators with its tower-like inflorescences, hosting the Variable Checkerspot butterfly and others. Nemophila Menziesii, known as Baby Blue Eyes, enchants with hypnotic beauty and distinct lobed leaves, available in three subspecies. Phacelia campanularia (Desertbells), features bell-like, dark violet blue petals, drawing the eye as if under a spell. Layia platyglossa(Tidy Tips), thrives in low-elevation, dry Californian habitats, endlessly blooming with its asymmetric flowers. Nemophila maculata (Fivespot), charmed me back to single-species planting to highlight the unique beauty of individual flowers. I didn’t think anyone read this far. LMK you made it by dropping a 🍀 in the comments. Drop a 💡if you enjoy these deep dives. And if you got excited about or learned something along the way I’d love to hear about it. #springblooms #🧂🌱🌸🐝 #plants #PlantTok #flowertok #plantfacts #plantnative
