Trimming a small bowl with a prominent step in its side, tap centred, quickly, I have a YouTube video on that process that should really help if you struggling how to do it, then the walls are thinned and the foot is formed, that’s my favourite part. As of my late I’ve been trying something different with my feet. Instead of having two angled faceted, they are now simply straight. This means that less raw clay is visible once the pots have been fired, which I prefer, and they sit more proudly on a pedestal, almost. That does mean I have to be more careful with my glazing, as my bowls no longer have a glaze catch, (the groove around the base wherein glaze can flow and build up without overflowing onto the kiln shelf). This means I have to tidy the glazed feet up carefully, making sure it isn’t coated too thickly, otherwise the glaze could spill over where it’s applied and fuse the vessel to the kiln shelf during the firing. I’m hoping that the ledge, on the exterior bowl portion of the pot, will cause the glaze to flood onto it, pooling into a thick band of glaze, together with breaking over the sharp edge it makes, to create another band of bright warm orange, as the iron rich clay burns through. Before and after, with one of my classics, a simple mug thrown from approximately 300 grams of stoneware clay that’s then coated in a thick layer of this red feldspathic crackle glaze before being fired in a reduction atmosphere to 1290ºC. The red glaze at this point is coloured simply by one percent red iron oxide, it isn’t a lot, but it’s enough to create this green tone once put through the kiln. Without any added oxide it remains a grey-white, the more that’s the added the deeper the green gets. At about ten percent it’s a deep dark brown, and beyond that it’s a fluid black that practically runs off the vessels. Before the glazing process can commence, I first coat the bottom of each mug, and well all my pots, in a layer of wax emulsion. Not bees wax or paraffin wax, but the stuff that comes already molten. I mix mine down with a splash of boiling water as this helps it brush on smoothly and, for safety reasons, I feel obliged to say that you should NEVER add water to molten bees or paraffin wax as doing so creates a rather terrifying fireball. The wax presents glaze from adhering to the base of the pot and during the firing it simply burns away, yet despite this protective layer, there’s always a few specks of glaze that settle on the wax, so I need to sponge the bottom clean, as well as tidy over the tong marks, before placing them inside my gas kiln to be fired. #beforeandafter #glazing #handmade #celadon #pottery #ceramics

From thrown to trimmed, these may be the deepest feet I’ve ever made and were a real challenge to finish, but as you all well now, turning pots is my favourite part of the process, so I relished it. And yes, they could very well be made in two parts, but I prefer not having to worry about any cracks forming between the two components, so I’ve made these from one lump of stoneware. I’ve made a batch of these before, only they were much smaller vessels, still raised on a sizeable foot, but nothing nearly as dramatic as these. Now, for my full reasoning as to why these aren’t goblets, you’ll have to watch the full film, I see these more as decorative and ceremonial objects and you’ll see that heinous word tagged onto these pots when I come to selling or exhibiting them. All jokes aside, for some drinks glass just works best, let’s keep it at that.
