Tonga volcano eruption still impacts Earth in 2024 Is today’s weather still affected by Tonga’s giant eruption in 2022? According to a new study, millions of tons of water ejected during the volcanic eruption are still lingering in the atmosphere and could potentially cause wetter winters in Australia and milder winters in Northern America until about 2029. The water vapor even played a role in an unusually large ozone hole in 2023. What happened? In January of 2022, the undersea volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai erupted in the South Pacific. The effects were felt around the world. For the first time in recorded history, an eruption triggered tsunamis in two different oceans. The shock waves from the eruption circled the globe several times and were recorded in every single country. The accompanying sonic boom was heard over 9,000 km away in Alaska — and the gigantic ash plume was visible from outer space. The uninhabited island of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai was only a few years old, and had been spawned by an earlier volcanic eruption. The explosion in 2022 also shredded an undersea cable — cutting off nearly all communications between Tonga and the rest of the world for over a month. All that remains of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic island are two small headlands. Study: Juncker et al. The rare nova explosion 2024 will be visible in our night sky soon! It’s not often that a dark spot in space lights up, but that is exactly what professional and amateur astronomers expect to happen in September 2024 — a once-in-a-lifetime nova explosion 3,000 lightyears from Earth will appear in ournight sky. We’ll be able to see it with our naked eyes. Astronomers are waiting for the fiery explosion of T Coronae Borealis, also dubbed the "Blaze Star" and known to astronomers as "T CrB". T CrB is actually asystem made up of two stars — a white dwarf and a red giant. The white dwarf is a dead star only about the size of Earth, but with the same mass as our Sun. Its neighbour the red giant is in its final years of existence and is slowly being stripped of hydrogen by the gravitational pull of the denser white dwarf. The explosion doesn't completely destroy either of the stars, so the nova event happens regularly over and over at around 80-year intervals – a pattern that could carry on for hundreds of thousands of years. This is different from a supernova, which can often kill a star. Author: Sushmitha Ramakrishnan #nova2024 #STEMTok #novaexplosion #supernova #nasa #LearnOnTikTok #space #dwscience #coronaeborealis
