@najifa.choudhury: In Bangladesh, the struggle for fair job opportunities has reached a boiling point, with students taking to the streets to demand change. The root of this protest lies in the country’s job quota system for government jobs. The Job Quota System: The Bangladeshi government job sector reserves a significant portion of positions for specific groups: • 30% for descendants of freedom fighters • 10% for women • 10% for districts • 5% for ethnic minorities • 1% for physically challenged individuals While intended to support marginalized groups, this system has inadvertently created barriers for many deserving candidates, leaving only a fraction of jobs open for merit-based competition. Additionally, while the 30% quota for descendants of freedom fighters sounds noble on paper, in reality, many wealthy individuals are faking documentation to claim these positions, depriving truly deserving candidates of opportunities based on merit. The Statistics: • Over 2 million students graduate each year, but only a few thousand government jobs are available. • The unemployment rate for graduates stands at approximately 47%, highlighting the dire need for a more inclusive job market. Historical Context: The quota system, established after Bangladesh’s independence, aimed to uplift disadvantaged communities. However, over the decades, the growing population and increased educational attainment have led to fierce competition, with many students feeling that their hard work and qualifications are overlooked. Why students are demanding change? • A reduction in the quota percentage to ensure more positions are filled based on merit. • Transparency in the recruitment process to prevent corruption and favoritism. • Better job creation policies to address the high unemployment rates among graduates. As someone that was born in Bangladesh, if I didn’t immigrate to America, then this would’ve been my reality too. Feel free to share this with others to give these poor students a voice that they don’t currently have. 🇧🇩
