We went in 2019 and had the most amazing experience everyone was super friendly and helpful. Went again in Feb 2024, very different feeling, there is simple too many tourists in Japan at the moment.

Both times we have been they been nothing but extremely friendly and went out of their way to be helpful, regardless countryside and city.

Interesting question. I think they appear to be patient, kind etc, but actually are not. I think a lot of it is about “saving face” and not appearing to look bad in front of others.

My 21 yr old son just came back , while he found them pleasant enough they don’t like to answer any questions if your lost or anything , just put their hands up and say “ no” and walk away

I went with a mate who is covered in tatts, we got treated very well. He even had multiple people including some elderly compliment his ink.

Hello! My partner is covered in tattoos (arms and legs) , I myself only have a couple small ones, we found in Tokyo people would just constantly stare at us, wouldn’t want us to sit down on the train
