INCREDIBLE CONSTRUCTION HISTORY!🙏🙏 MADISON, Wis.- When you think of someone moving apartments, you imagine them moving people and belongings to a new building -- not literally moving the apartment building itself to a new location. Crews rolled a large building on wheels through downtown Madison, from the 400 block of West Dayton to the 500 Block of West Mifflin Street. The apartment building was supposed to make a 1-day, 1-block journey Thursday. However, according to the owner and City of Madison Building Inspection officials, MG&E had to restore power for residents in the area Thursday night. But residents didn't seem to mind the two-day spectacle.
"It's kind of fun," Lizzie Revelis told News 3 Now Friday. "And sitting out with the neighbors, getting to know my neighbors honestly for the first time and talking about it, seeing the guys do their thing." So why transport a 400-ton empty building? "It was a great building. I just had to save it," Brandon Cook, owner of the "structure on wheels" said. "It's replacing a single family house that was past its useful life," he said. "So it's a great opportunity to keep housing stock, good housing stock in Madison." It also made sense. Cook said it was built in such a way that it can fit into every lot in the neighborhood, and it's young enough. He said his plan received unanimous approval through the City channels. That ended up being the easy part of moving a building 23 ft wide by 84 ft long. "It's a logistic nightmare," Cook said. "I mean, it's power lines and utilities and trees and everything." It took a crew of 18 movers, then 30 others from MG&E, Charter and AT&T rolling the structure inch by inch. "I heard someone say: 'with the gutter on the edge of the road, let's be careful about the house tipping over'," Revelis said. One onlooker, Emma, was somewhat used to the work. "We've had our house lifted up before by these guys, but it's cool watching a whole apartment building being moved." Cook said they were supposed to move another building, but ran out of time. "So now I need to draft plans and reconstruct the building that was supposed to be in the rear yard." But the expensive and intensive move of one building was thrills enough for now. "The fact that it's coming together is a miracle, I mean, it's just a miracle," he said. "Definitely nothing I've ever seen before," Revelis said. Cook expects people to start moving into the apartment building's new location next fall. #BrunnoNoBs 👊👊 #construction #historicalmoments #building #technology #viral #foryou
