On November 1, 2024, a federal jury in Louisville, Kentucky, convicted former police detective Brett Hankison of using excessive force during the 2020 raid that resulted in Breonna Taylor’s death. This marks the first conviction of a Louisville officer involved in the fatal incident. Hankison was found guilty of violating Taylor’s civil rights by firing 10 shots into her apartment, though none struck her. Some bullets penetrated a neighboring unit, endangering its occupants. The jury acquitted Hankison on charges related to the neighbors but convicted him concerning Taylor. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, with sentencing scheduled for March 12, 2025. The other officers involved were: ▪️Joshua Jaynes •	Role: Former LMPD detective. •	Charges: Initially charged with falsifying the search warrant leading to the raid. In August 2024, a federal judge dismissed major felony charges against him. However, in October 2024, the Department of Justice filed new indictments, including charges of conspiracy and falsifying records. •	Employment Status: Terminated from LMPD in January 2021. ▪️Kyle Meany •	Role: Former LMPD sergeant. •	Charges: Similar to Jaynes, faced initial charges related to the falsified warrant, which were dismissed in August 2024. New federal charges were filed in October 2024, including conspiracy and making false statements to the FBI. •	Employment Status: Terminated from LMPD in August 2022. ▪️Kelly Goodlett •	Role: Former LMPD detective. •	Charges: Pleaded guilty in August 2022 to federal charges of conspiring to falsify the search warrant affidavit and subsequently covering up the false information. •	Employment Status: Resigned from LMPD in August 2022. ▪️Myles Cosgrove •	Role: Former LMPD detective who fired the shot that killed Breonna Taylor. •	Charges: No criminal charges were filed against him. •	Employment Status: Terminated from LMPD in January 2021. ▪️Jonathan Mattingly •	Role: Former LMPD sergeant who was shot in the leg during the raid. •	Charges: No criminal charges were filed against him. •	Employment Status: Retired from LMPD in June 2021. Breonna Taylor’s family reached a settlement with the city of Louisville in September 2020. The agreement included a $12 million payment to the family and a commitment to implement police reforms aimed at preventing future incidents. Since her tragic death in March 2020, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) has implemented several reforms: 🚫 Ban on No-Knock Warrants: In June 2020, the Louisville Metro Council unanimously passed “Breonna’s Law,” prohibiting the use of no-knock search warrants. This legislation also mandates that officers wear body cameras during the execution of all search warrants. ⚠️ Duty to Intervene Policy: LMPD established a policy requiring officers to intervene if they witness colleagues engaging in unlawful or excessive force. This measure aims to promote accountability within the force. 📹 Body-Worn Camera Mandate: Officers are now required to activate body-worn cameras during all law enforcement activities, enhancing transparency and accountability. 📄 Search Warrant Reforms: The department has revised its procedures for obtaining and executing search warrants to ensure accuracy and adherence to constitutional standards. 🗣️ Community Engagement Initiatives: LMPD has increased efforts to engage with the community, including establishing advisory boards and hosting public forums to foster dialogue and rebuild trust. 📚 Training Enhancements: The department has expanded training programs focusing on de-escalation techniques, implicit bias, and cultural competency to better equip officers in handling diverse situations. #BreonnaTaylor #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor #Louisville #Kentucky #LawEnforcement #Justice #Accountability #LouisvillePD
