Balerion 'The Black Dread' Dragon, Was BIGGER Than You Think Balerion the Black Dread, a name that evokes terror and awe in equal measure, was the largest and arguably the most formidable dragon ever seen in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. Unlike the other dragons that played a part in Aegon the Conqueror's unification of the Seven Kingdoms, Balerion originated from the ancient civilization of Valyria, making him the sole survivor of that era brought to Westeros. Balerion's immense size was legendary. He dwarfed even the most impressive dragons hatched later, with the ability to swallow an aurochs whole. His scales were jet black, and his fiery breath was said to be capable of melting castles to slag. This terrifying image earned him the moniker "The Black Dread." Balerion wasn't just a monstrous beast; he was a key instrument of Targaryen power. Aegon the Conqueror rode Balerion during his conquest, and the dragon's presence instilled fear and hopelessness in his enemies. Balerion continued to serve Targaryen kings for generations, with notable riders including the cruel Maegor I and Princess Aerea Targaryen. By the time of later events in the series, Balerion had long passed away. He died of old age at a staggering two hundred years old, a testament to the longevity of dragons. His immense skull, however, remained a chilling reminder of his power. It was displayed in the Red Keep's dungeons, serving as a symbol of Targaryen might, even in their decline. #foryou #houseofthedragon #gameofthrones #hbomax
