In the last year I’ve mentored over twenty students who have had the same concerns when it comes to teaching yoga. They’re unsure how to make a living from teaching and, after their teacher training, they are still not confident in how to teach yoga in its entirety. I believe that a huge part of the reasoning behind this is because yoga teacher trainings in the Western world mostly prepare us on how to become good asana teachers, whilst forgetting to mention that the role of a teacher is also to continue learning and embody yoga, perhaps even before going straight into teaching. The commercialisation of yoga in the West means there has been a huge increase in yoga teacher trainings. The problem isn’t necessarily the trainings, but the way that they are being mis-sold to students whilst leaving out core parts of the tradition. A few things you can do before considering a yoga teacher training are: ✨ Learn how to embody the philosophy of yoga and live it in daily life. ✨ Take short courses on Sanskrit and philosophy so you can begin to understand the language and concepts that underpin the practice. ✨ Read beyond modern yoga books. Explore the traditional texts and teachings that yoga comes from, rather than only learning about yoga through its modern interpretation. ✨ Practise more than asana. Explore meditation, pranayama, mantra, mudra, self-study and the ethical foundations of yoga. ✨ Find teachers who are still students themselves. Look for people who are committed to their own study, have respect for the tradition and can teach you beyond what happens on a yoga mat. ✨ Give yourself time. You don’t need to rush into becoming a teacher simply because you’ve completed a training. Being a yoga teacher is a lifelong practice of learning, questioning, practicing and embodying what you teach. This is the why of I created my Roots of Yoga app. It’s a space where you can learn and practice yoga with me, whilst building a deeper understanding of the tradition behind the practice. If you’ve been wanting to go beyond the asana, you can find me there. Link in bio for a 7 day free trial 🌱. #authenticyoga #yogateaching #yogaforbeginners #yogaeducation #beginneryoga
