We have a built in cupboard we got a unit like the ikea kalex ones but from home base and put it in there gave us more storage for socks/ tights cardigans shoes etc x

My dad built a wardrobe/storage ontop of our stair cupboard when we were children, I’ve seen loads of people separate rooms with kallax units too that looks really good x
