The Mango originated in the Hindo-Berma region, which is now eastern India, southern China, and Southeast Asia, over 5,000 years ago. Spread: Mango seeds traveled with humans from Asia to the Middle East, East Africa, and South America beginning around 300 or 400 A.D. Europe: The Portuguese brought mangoes to Europe, and later the English. Brazil: The Portuguese brought mangoes to Brazil from East & West Africa in the 16th to the 17th centuries. By the mid to late 18th century, mangoes had spread from Brazil to the Caribbean and Eastern Mexico. Barbados: Mangoes were first planted in Barbados in 1742. Jamaica: In 1782, Lord Rodney's ship H.M.S Flora captured mango plants on their way from the East Indians to the West Indies. Cuba: In 1789, an English physician working for a slave-trade company is believed to have introduced a mango seed from Jamaica to Cuba. Puerto Rico: Mango trees were brought to Puerto Rico around 1750. Florida: The first attempt to introduce mangoes to the U.S. was in 1833 to Florida. However, the trees died from neglect following the death of Dr. Henry Perrine, who attempted to introduce them. Naturalization: Mangoes have naturalized themselves to almost every Caribbean island, and are particularly widespread in Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, St Lucia, Martinique, and Trinidad – Tobago. Name: The name "mango" likely comes from the Malayam word manna, which the Portuguese adopted as manga when they arrived in Kerala in 1498. #mangos #mangoes #mango #india #asia #caribbean #latinamerica #china #mangoseason #fruits #fruit #mangomangomango #mangomango #thosewhoknow
