Once happened to us...they didn't accept our debit card only credit cards and we had to drive back to the previous town 20 km away to draw money.

South Africans are generally quite friendly people, you would have probably gotten help if you just asked another driver to cover you. Your best bet is probably a taxi or truck driver, no jokes.
