These sculptures have gotten so much love, and I’ve received numerous questions about the process, so I’ll answer them all here in case you’d like to try creating with air dry clay 🩵 “Which clay do you use?” - I use DAS air dry clay, and I always have a bowl of warm water nearby that I dip my fingers in to keep everything nice and smooth. I love the clay and haven’t felt the need to try another brand. “Are the sculptures hollow?” - No they’re not hollow, but I do bulk them out with tinfoil (a huge thank you to @boldestudios for the tip! 🙏🏻). This way I don’t need as much clay, and the sculptures dry faster. They’re usually completely dry within 48 hours. If the sculpture feels cold to the touch, it’s not dry yet. “How do you get them so smooth?” - I use sandpaper, and many, many hours to sand them down. Fortunately this is my favorite part. I also sand off any unwanted lumps, and use the sandpaper to shape the tails and fins. I first use a lower grit, and then change to finer sandpaper. “Do you have to prime the sculptures before painting them?” - Yes, it’s always best to prime them first in order to have a smooth, non-porous surface to work with. Just make sure the sculpture is completely dry first. I use either gesso or acrylic paint - either is fine. Sometimes I even do a layer of both. “How do you use soft pastels?” - I first paint the sculpture with acrylics, and then add color and shading with soft pastels (Jaxell). I also use them to blur the edges a little bit (like with the orca). I scrape off a bit of color from the soft pastels sticks, and gently dust on the powder with a very soft paintbrush. This is a trick I learned from @michi.mux - thank you! Things can get very messy at this stage, so pay attention to where you hold the sculpture, and maybe draw on the eyes and any other parts before you start brushing on the pastels. Tip: If you’re unhappy with the paint job, you can just remove the layer with sandpaper and try again! “How do you varnish the sculptures?” - With a universal semi-matte spray varnish (Schmincke). I find it the easiest and fastest way to seal the sculptures.
