@openbookshelf: I didn't realise this was such a genuinely pervasive argument by #Republicans in the US. If you have any experience of this narrative, please let me know. I'm interested to hear how ordinary Republican voters are responding to the idea that they're not worthy of their vote... #americaisthebadplace #trump2024 #uselection

I think it’s more basic than any of this. Democracy sounds like Democrat. They insist we’re a constitutional republic because republic sounds like republican

I just think most systems are just a variation of feudalism with more wiggle room, I just think the rich want to rule without taking accountability. Cynical yes, seems what every system has done so fa

The Republican migration 2 this type of government is obvious because they're voting block is shrinking. If you U no longer can get or have the votes, U have to change the rules in your favor

I'd argue that the US is far closer to a plutocracy or oligarchy than any sort of democracy that primarily serves the will of the people

I’ve seen the “we’re a republic not a democracy” online (and I seem to recall in magazine commentary, in the 90s) for decades.

Arguably any benefit from laws being made by an elite, is already gained by representative democracy where we get to vote for the rule-makers. Politicians ought to be better at framing laws than voters.

Seems to me the arguments dovetail also with the huge rise in education delivery to broad swathes of humans across the world. Democracy requires educated publics. Elite governance does not

I’m confused. I thought a Republic was “Res Publica” a public affair, and therefore a true Republic must be democratic if it’s to include the public in the affair of governance.

I think there is some merit in making sure a person understands the power and weight of their vote and uses it. The Australian system works well for this, but a test/qualification for voting might too

I believe compulsory voting is important element of democracy. But unfortunately political divide is where the problem is. Also structure of bureaucracy does need to be more accountable.

I’ve heard them say the US is not a democracy at all, not that they don’t want it, that they already don’t have. They say they’re a constitutional republic. Of course those two things are different.

In the US, this is very entwined with the “prosperity gospel” religious ideology of fundamentalist Christianity and white supremacy too.

I’ve been hearing variations on this from republicans for years. The whole providing identification to vote disenfranchising black and poor people. People should take a test to be able to vote. Etc. there’s a long history here of this sort of thing and republicans are just trying to find new ways to do the same old thing.

Yes well said, but Roe V Wade was a SCOTUS decision, not legislation. That’s one of the critiques of securing abortion rights that way—it was handed down by a court so never faced democratic test

Ironically, we have many Africans talking against democracy, saying it's a Western system forced on them. "Democracy was created by the elites for the elites," said one to me.
