How we taught our daughter to talk (6-18 months) Went back through a bunch of old videos from when Lessi was 6-18 months old and put together some key moments of learning letter sounds, short words and phrases. This was definitely a process and took a lot of repetition every day. She didn’t always respond or would respond by pointing/nodding instead of with words but eventually she transitioned to more words. Below are some things we both did with her when we spoke to her each day that definitely helped over time! Hope this is helpful for you as well! Some things that helped: 1. A lot of repetition and patience 2. Continuing to speak to her even when she didn’t speak/respond back 3. Speaking slowly and letting her watch our mouth as we spoke (looking into phone camera together like with these videos or into the mirror helped with this) 4. Breaking down longer words/phrases into short syllables. Repeating over time (EX: banana = ba-na-na) 5. Asking lots of questions (EX: “do you want a banana?”) 6. Giving her language for whatever she was trying to say (EX: she points at chair across from her, we ask her “do you want me to sit there?”) 7. Waiting for her to respond in some way before doing what she was asking then acknowledging her (EX: do you want me to sit here? .. Yeah.. Okay I’ll sit here”) 8. Narrating a lot of what we did even if it seemed obvious (EX: “Yum! This food is really good” or “I’m really thirsty I’m going to go get some water”) 9. Asking her to repeat things back to us (EX: she sees a picture of a duck - “oh look a duck! can you say duck?”) 10. Singing words (EX: when we sing “Je-sus”) or changing tone/pitch for each syllable to help keep her attention and differentiate between the sounds (EX: when she says “No-nna” or “We-la”)
