BURYING FOOD SCRAPS is a time-honored technique for boosting fertility in the garden...but what's the best way to do it? To find out, we grew 6 Italian Roma tomatoes from @botanical_interests from seed, dug 6 holes, and buried 6 different kinds of food scraps: @jacquesinthegarden leftovers of sourdough, pasta, and beans Weeds from around the yard Catfish heads Kitchen trimmings Eggs ...and nothing, as a control We then planted the 6 tomatoes above and watered in, then waited. The results shocked us, but honestly, they shouldn't have! The more complex the food scraps, the longer they take to break down and thus the less available nutrients for the tomato to uptake. This is why the Egg tomato and the Nothing tomato won out...their roots could easily access the nutrients inherent within the native soil and grow normally. So if you're going to bury food scraps, we recommend burying AHEAD of your planting time. In fact, on YouTube later this week we'll have a video with some awesome gardeners explaining exactly why you should bury food scraps in your garden RIGHT now. #garden
