Squid Game 2 actor Park Sung-hoon has responded to backlash over his portrayal of a transgender character In the hit Netflix show, the Korean actor plays Hyun-ju, also known as Player 120, a transgender woman and former special forces soldier who joins the game to pay for her gender-affirming surgery. In an interview with Korea JoongAng Daily on Wednesday 8 January, Sung-Hoon said he approached the role with “more detail and caution” and consulted with trans people to ensure the character wouldn’t be seen as a “caricature”. He told reporters: “I never wanted to overdo the voice or exaggerate my gestures, and the director fully agreed with me on that. Since my natural voice is quite deep, I felt that altering it too much would undermine the emotional authenticity.” The actor added that growing up with sisters helped him to develop a “feminine side”, which caught the attention of Squid Game 2 Director Hwang Dong-hyuk. Park went on to say that the director knew he was right for the role after seeing him in 2021’s Hee-soo, in which he played a father who lost his daughter in a car accident. The casting of a non-trans actor for the role of Hyun-Ju in Squid Game 2 initially drew backlash from fans. However, director Dong-hyuk defended his casting of Park Sung-Hoon, saying: “In Korea, there are close to no actors [who] are openly trans, let alone openly gay, because, unfortunately, in Korean society, the LGBTQ+ community is still marginalised and more neglected, which is heart-breaking.” #squidgame #squidgame2 #parksunghoon #transwoman #lgbtqia
