@nobody.important000: the curtains are blue because they were on special... #writing #author #foryoupage #foryou #fyp #art #book #BookTok #booktiktok #movies #plays #theatre #theatrekid
I wrote an essay on a novel that was written by a woman that did interior decorating as her day job (back in the very early 1900s). The color of the curtains *mattered* in that story.

The Dresden Files. I'm doing a writing course and in DF there was a whole A character who showed up just to tell Dresden something he witnessed and Dresden didn't and then was not seen again for

In context I use color to establish tone. A character likes blue and surrounds themselves with it. But also if I establish that character as hyper and eccentric, then I can use that color later 1/2

I always feel like it was the context that played a key as to whether the curtains were actually blue. and on another hand, I always feel like it's kind of like a dm throwing pot hooks here and there

for the creative writing buff I am not, occasionally write dnd or wod stuff, both blue curtains and chekov's gun are in a Schroedinger situation of "it's set dressing but also could be something else"

it's really interesting when designing for a play figure out how to have the prop you've gone out of the way to get bc it's important onstage, but to do that without making it obvious it's important

So would it be a bad idea to make the curtains blue and have the gun in the beach episode just to cause some chaos with people asking why and then asking again because they were pointless details?

I used to ask every English teacher how we knew things meant what they said they meant in books and stories. My AP lit teacher’s response was we don’t but most people agree on this. Still respect her!

They bought the curtains 3 years ago to a blue screen special effect for a different play, and haven't had the budget to get new ones since. The Principle of Narrative Effeciency only applies...

The play part also works for comics/Manga : why would one learn to draw something specific if it won't be used again!

Even if the curtains are just blue, the subconscious biasses of the Author could have contributing factors to why blue was chosen.

sometimes describing the room is also describing the person if it's their private room, period piece could be wealth, modern could be they're a bit of a downer

I feel like why are the curtains blue comes from the same school of thought as a lot of Internet Memes. The one that doesn’t quite understand what it’s talking about, but wants to appear smart.

The purple dye that will kill its inventor is more or less the plot of the Alec Guinness film The Man in the White Suit. I'm a fan of efficiency, but then I write poetry, so fewer words do more work.

I read cozy crime mainly these days you have to throw in irrelevant details or else the book becomes boring, obvious, too easy etc.
