The piua, a water-powered device, has been the heartbeat of textile production for centuries, tracing its roots back to the Roman era. In the medieval period, it became an indispensable part of rural life, churning out pasla for clothing, footwear, and various articles. The piua, a seemingly simple yet highly efficient device, consists of a water wheel mounted on an axis connected to a mechanism that generates motion. In the case of pasla production, the mechanism involves a hammer striking wool fibers, magically transforming them into the coveted textile. The process is labor-intensive, demanding both time and skill. While this water-driven marvel was widely used in Romania until the early 20th century, it gradually bowed to the march of modern machines. The process was laborious, from washing and soaking the wool to mixing it with a moisture agent like vinegar or soap, each step was an intricate dance. The piua's hammer struck the wool, birthing pasla that would be wrung, dried, and fashioned into clothing, footwear, or bedding.
