The exquisite question is why they were compelled to resort to building such defenses that are so dangerous and hard to live in. It wasn’t animals.

Usually, civilization is enabled around communal agriculture. Food is scarce and hard won in a desert. Competition for food must have been a driver for such living conditions.

To grow sufficient and then more food would require cooperation. The ruins suggest more hunter/gathers that compete which suggests waring over scarce resources.
