Usually, civilization is enabled around communal agriculture. Food is scarce and hard won in a desert. Competition for food must have been a driver for such living conditions.

To grow sufficient and then more food would require cooperation. The ruins suggest more hunter/gathers that compete which suggests waring over scarce resources.
