Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), a Palestinian American, held up a small sign reading “Guilty of Genocide” and “War Criminal” during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress on Wednesday. Dozens of Democratic lawmakers boycotted the speech altogether, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who instead met with “Israeli citizens whose families have suffered in the wake of the October 7th Hamas terror attack and kidnappings,” according to her spokesperson. Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) as well as former Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-MS) also skipped the address. Vice President Kamala Harris did not preside over the joint meeting, citing a previously scheduled trip to Indianapolis. Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA) declined the invitation to preside in her place, leaving the task to fall to Foreign Relations Committee Chair Ben Cardin (D-MD).
