This dance wasn't written for John Travolta 🏆 Everyone assumes Tarantino invented the Jack Rabbit Slim's scene to get Travolta dancing, fresh off Saturday Night Fever and Grease. In fact, the scene was already in the script before the actor was cast. The film is Pulp Fiction (1994), and as his source Tarantino has pointed to Godard's Bande à part, the film that also gave his production company its name, A Band Apart. But according to several critics, there's another scene in Vincent and Mia's steps: the dance in Fellini's 8½ (1963), between Mario Pisu and Barbara Steele, with moves and camera angles that are almost identical. What changes is the context. In Fellini, the two dance among older couples, in a black-and-white film about a director's creative crisis; in Tarantino, the same energy explodes in color in a 1950s-themed restaurant, in a film that isn't a musical and, for a few minutes, stops to become one. There was no choreography: Tarantino gave the two actors no steps to learn and danced himself behind the camera on set, to Chuck Berry's You Never Can Tell, as behind-the-scenes footage shows. Uma Thurman was intimidated by the idea of dancing with Travolta, and Tarantino passed that on to him, and he simply told her to shut up and twist. She didn't even like the song, and all Tarantino had to say was: "Trust me, it's perfect." Mia Wallace, for that matter, almost didn't exist: Thurman had turned the part down, and Tarantino read her the script over the phone to convince her. And among the tables is Steve Buscemi, as the waiter dressed as Buddy Holly, who had to give up another role in the film because of scheduling conflicts. #viral #fyp #dance #trend #xyzbca
