@entertainment.sauce: can we take a moment to just think about how incredibly scary magical healing is in-context? You get your insides ripped open but your friend waves his hands and your flesh just pulls back together, agony and evisceration pulling back to a 'kinda hurts' level of pain and you're physically whole, with the 100% expectation that you'll get back up and keep fighting whatever it was that struck you down the first time. #qna #tumblr #funny #storytime #fantasy

also you probably feel the injury pull itself together, you feel the bones mend, the skin tug, the muscles latch

I like to think it works like Steven Universes healing. Y’all remember when he went to the doctor in Steven Universe Future ? The body is healed but trauma + excessive cortisol exposure remains

Crazy diamond from jojos completely counters this. Instead of taking damage and “healing” crazy diamond reverses what happens to things, effectively removing any effects you previously felt. Cool❗️

I like the idea in some fiction spaces that healing magic is actually temporal in nature and thus is a commodity that takes decades to learn while also giving excessive strain to the caster

only thing is is that healing doesn't prevent aging...generally. it enhances the body's natural ability to heal; but it can only do that so many times so technically you're removing years off.

In our DnD campaign I have a character that feels no pain so she doesn't know how injured she is. Once she was healed w/a minor spell & turned out to have more internal DMG than we thought— a Dr. had•

Reminds me of dungeon meshi but to a somewhat less extreme conditions. That being that raw healing will cause hurt to the person being healed and one of the characters being weary of the magic user

Funnily one of the few works of fiction I’ve seen adress the effects of magical healing, is… the fanfic Fallout Equestria. It addresses that in *excruciating* detail

If I ever made a magic system I feel like I would just make a more effective version of existing medical practice. Like, you need to know how the human body works in order to heal it, down to the 1/?

This is how it is in my campaign, our characters are dying over and over in a time loop. And when we finish it i want my main character to still feel as if the last way they were killed. wake up-

as scary as this is I also kinda love it? it also adds just that more depth to my characters as I tend to be the group healer and now I can ask more specifics like "do you want the scars?"

I actually addressed this in the book I'm writing. A guy who doesn't know about magic gets an open fracture healed and just screams and passes out.
