True HAM radio requires a license to TX but not RX. But when SHTF licensing is no longer needed.

DO NOT USE a HAM Radio outside of an emergency, you have to be certified, and trust me those operators know how to find you quickly

i have a bunch of these. so the first thing you'll need is the updated longer antenna. it will only reach about 1.5 miles. unless ur on a mountain. but all and all for the price it's awesome

GMRS is a better option for families that want to to communicate. There's no test, your license covers you and your entire immediate family. It's a stepping stone to ham radio.
