I think he just knows how to skate like a roller derby player. The mechanics of how you do these moves is a lot different than how you would do it on ice. They just look similar.

I used to figure skate and showed up to my first lesson in hockey boots switching to figure skates was the hardest thing I've ever done until I switched back to hockey boots

Hockey skates normally don’t have picks on the front. When I was learning to skate I had a couple notches in my trainers at the back of the blade. But they disappear after you get to the larger skate
