There’s so much to explore in the intertidal zone 🤩! Heres what i found in the tidepools at @Saltwood Beach House! 💚Giant green sea anemone: these intertidal creatures can grow to be 18cm wide and 30cm high. They have short cone-shaped tentacles in rows around their oral disc which contain stinging cells to catch prey and to protect themselves from predators. ⭐️Ochre Sea Stars: these iconic sea stars colour the rocky intertidal zone with purple, orange, yellow, reddish, or brown coloured five-legged stars. They attach themselves onto rocks with their tube feet so they aren't swept away in the crashing waves or retreating tides. 🌻Sunflower Sea Star: as one of the largest and heaviest sea stars in the world, sunflower sea star can reach 1m (3.3ft) in diameter and weigh up to 5kg! This Critically Endangered species can have up to 24 limbs, be a variety colours from brown, yellowish-red, to bright orange. 🐌Marine snails: there were a variety of different marine snails in the tide pools, such as Sitka Periwinkles, Carinate Dovesnails, Blue-ringed top snails, Black Tegulas, and more. 🦪California mussels: this marine bivalve has two thick shells that can reach 13cm (5.5 inches) long! Their shells are blue with a brown periostracum (outermost layer). Byssal threads are used to attach the animal onto rocks in the intertidal zone. These mussels are edible, but be aware of harvesting during red tide. 🔺Limpets: these sea snails have cone-shaped shells and a super strong foot that clings their bodies onto rocks. They move around grazing on algae by using their teeth-covered tongue called a radula. There were mask limits, plate limits, and more on my tide pool exploration! #tidepools #marinebiology #intertidal #ucluelet #vancouverisland #seastar #naturalist #naturenerd #vancouverisland #tidepooling
