I wanted to read your white paper research, but I don’t want to get text messages from Rock and it asked me what role I play at my company and it has every role except for technician.

Confidence is great, knowledge is great. Humility is better than them both. Even after 30 years, if I start getting cocky, the cargods will crush me like the bug I am.

I was doing engine swaps at 16 and tried to go to a tech school after highschool. my fellow students had never held a wrench before. I left after a year and just went to work.

Do you need to have any certifications or schooling to work at a dealership as a tech?

I understand you are generalizing all shops for simplicity but there are two different types of shops. Teaching shops and working shops. I’m at a Dealership now that has installed the teaching side

humility is a quality and or skill I look for in interviews... as a 32 year vet in automotive I still get weird when people announce I am the all knowing because I am constantly learning everyday.. techs that come out of school with the "I know what I'm doing" mind set don't learn new tricks and skills... and let's face it... not everybody is cut out for it... just saying...

This is one of the reasons I love being hourly in forklifts, it allows for a much better learning experience, if you need a hand the more experienced techs are happy to help since it won’t effect pay

on the other hand, what about new grad techs with no experience that won't listen to a seasoned tech / shop foreman then they screw shit up, then they want help from shop foreman? what's your take?

I absolutely agree fresh techs need to have a mentor to help develop the hands on skills. However that also means the mentor needs to be both competent, patient, and compensated.

Just like any other trade, they should go through an apprentice program in shops. Pay the veteran tech more to train the new guy for at least 90 days, maybe more.

When I was a young tech fresh out of the Navy, I felt frustrated when jobs that I could actually do that I had training for went to techs that had more experience. I was ready and able to do the work.

its hard to teach someone who is convinced they know everything already. so yes, for that reason we let them drown a bit to humble themselves. it builds character

You’re missing the part where MOST DEALERSHIPS take these newbies and want them to just do the gravy for $15/hr flat rate…. Then just expect the seasoned masters to bail them out for free..
