3RD TRY. IM SO SORRY SOME OF YOU PROBABLY THINK IM SO ANNOYING. :| /// Explaining the video + symbolism + lyrics here !!! (VERY LONG) This is the moment when Kaveh and Alhaitham reunite at the tavern. Kaveh is mid drink when Alhaitham approaches, puts a hand over his cup and says, “I’m sorry.” The video then cuts to flashbacks of their time at the Akademiya, one happy memory and one memory that would lead to the end of their friendship… for the time being… When the song states “as sick as it sounds”, we are put back into the present where Kaveh meets Alhaitham’s eyes and is suddenly flooded by all the emotions that he had intended to forget with his ex-best friend. The “I loved you first” sequence shows all the versions of Alhaitham that Kaveh loved (loves) and his impression of how Alhaitham thought about their relationship. 1st: Friendly/Neutral, 2nd: Bitter/Angry, 3rd: Indifferent/Moved On. Alhaitham interrupts these thoughts in present time by saying “I was a dick” along with the song. I don’t think he’d actually say something like that, but I like to imagine that he’s contuining his apology as my theory for their friendship-ending argument had something to do with Alhaitham being too harsh with his words… but I could go on about that in another essay. I digress. Kaveh responds with “It is what it is”, trying to come off as if he no longer cares about the status of his relationship with Alhaitham AND to act cool about his feelings on his devastating financial status that brought Alhaitham to him in the first place. He’s already in a rough patch and seeing someone who used to be his only support system after feeling alone for so long would only make it worse for Kaveh. Emotionally. The next scene shows Kaveh’s ascension material flower; the mourning flower. It’s withered and has lost 3 of the 4 buds it had, leaving 1 to mourn the losses. Each flower represents a person that Kaveh’s felt he’s lost in his life, starting with his parents and then Alhaitham; hence, “age long curse” refers to him being unable to keep those he loves with him and as he moves through life mourning them. This is shown in the next sequence centered on Kaveh and his family slowly leaving him as his age progresses, a compositional parallel to Alhaitham’s earlier sequence. The last 4 shots is present time Kaveh trying to laugh away these thoughts, until he finally sheds tears (with small a hopeless smile) before Alhaitham gives him a hug.
