I've never liked the dark souls style of gaming where everything is super difficult. I game to relax and have fun, I might up the difficulty but I'm also not interested in suffering for pixels

if there's something i loved about physical games, it's the manuals. professor layton and pandora's box had a train ticket in the manual you could use to solve one of the puzzles.

I don't know if y'all have heard of this, but there's a Zelda like game called Tunic that actually has a built in game manual, that gives tips and tricks to the game.

Related to "only experiencing games through emulators" is that there's an entire "style" of game art that only exists because people didn't experience old graphics through CRTs

sometime around the ps2, cheat codes became a gaming sin, I think the real nail was when games like GTA disabled achievements if you used cheat codes

Or even games like the original Mario where I am not good enough to beat all the levels but I am good enough to beat 8 levels and skip 5 entire worlds

accessibility features are so wonderful for literally everyone, sometimes people are just bad at a game that they like and assist modes like the ones in control can help people appreciate the awesome

original halo came with a full book that told you how each weapon worked and what they were best for, and i miss that

It was also too save space on the discs and cartridges the more they put in the manual the more space they had got game play

I used to be like this because I was too poor to get games with manuals. Everything was hand me down and no Internet/Friends to give me codes. I experienced those games as people-

Willie The Automaton :
the books aren't used to teach you the game. the mechanics taught you the game. they'd have you learn each mechanic by putting something easy in your way. then they upped the difficulty.

I was hit by nostalgia when I got my hands on Dark Souls 3. No tutorials, no bs, instead a detailed manual explaining game mechanics, classes, lore etc. oldschool!

I still cheat on games with trainers (offline only) to this day. I enjoy the power fantasy. I don’t need some fan boy to tell me how to enjoy my game.

I downloaded the first Zelda game on a mobile emulator knowing full well that the game itselft tells you NOTHING. I'm just running around killing stuff and being killed lol

This is why it can be super hard to get into video games today. No tutorials for "obvious stuff". Guezz what, it is not obvious for people who have not spent their childhood inside

Speaking of guidebooks, I played an rpg as a little kid that had a shit ton of monsters you had to fuse for, plus special ones using specific monsters. I had no idea how anyone would find them…

videogmes being mixed media is something I greatly miss. used to love reading the manual and buying the strategy guide (even if I never used it) so that I had physical books to look at and read.

Even with that old diffcult games have those, ninja gaiden for example in easy mode is practically a god mode, perfect parrys and nearly zero damage from the enemys

I remembered difficulty settings being more prominent. now it seems like games are entirely online (no difficulty setting needed) or just on hard mode.

When I had my N64 I very rarely if ever got a brand new game for it would always get some from friends or flea markets so I was just going in blind and had no internet so I was double blind 😂

the issue is a lot of game developers found out that if you take longer to play and beat their game it means they can make a shorter game for less money

I always hated the "its not how the game is meant to be enjoyed!" no? the game is just meant to be enjoyed. that's the purpose.

cheats originally existed to help devs debug the game during developement. Then just left them there. Great fun, modern games should still have them

there’s a game on the ds and the 3ds called retro game challenge to replicate this experience sorta!! there’s also a more recent game called tunics if you wanted something on modern consoles

there was also a reason for NES era games being hard. memory space. they had very little memory to work with on those cartridges, so to get good playtime, they made the games hard as fuck

People get mad at us for using Wikis when I used to be able to grab the manual that came with the game to look up what the damn blue feather was for in Harvest Moon, now I have to Google that stuff

It’s because gamer bros are fucking idiots who act like because something is popular with men that means it has never been accessible or comfortable. Or that it never should be
