@abanaturally: Important things to remember when your child refuses to do as told: 1. Stay calm. Try not to meet your child at their level of frustration. We are showing them how we respond in moments of difficulty, and that should be done with guidance and support. 2. Refrain from offering your child something good to encourage them to do what they are refusing. That would teach them that refusing to do things results in positive outcomes. 3. Do not yell at them. They are a child and in the process of learning. Additionally, yelling just provides a ton of attention for problem behavior. And there’s nothing better than our attention— positive or negative! 4. Do not remove the instruction just because they said no. There will be many times in their life they don’t want to do something, and we won’t always be there to remove the obstacle. 5. With that being said, you can alter the environment to set them up for success. I handed Grace the tile instead of having her walk to get them, and I moved the basket closer to her. After she started putting the tiles in, I moved the basket back and she went to pick them up herself. 6. Finally, reinforce your child when they begin doing what you asked. 7. Proactive strategies will always be your best bet. In my Practical Parenting course, I will teach you step-by-step how to teach expectations, proactive strategies to reduce the likelihood of problem behavior even happening, what to do if it does (for various situations), and how to get your child to do what you asked them to, and much more. I find the “make everything a fun game” or having to use a singsong voice in response to resistant behavior so exhausting. This is a refreshing alternative.

What if the child never gives in? My three year old will refuse for hours of me sitting there trying to do this 🥴😭 what do you do then if not offering a reward to make them do it?

What do you do for yourself to be in that headspace consistently? Asking as a mom of 2 going through divorce and always tired 😅

I feel like you focused so much on grace but didn’t praise Sophia for not needing guidance. As an older child that really hurts and I remember those moments so clearly.

You have a very easy toddler. She didn’t hit or throw things or break the toy or throw herself on the floor or run out of the room or have a meltdown that lasts 90 mins.

I would have focused on how helpful the older child was being, the little would have wanted to be noticed too
