Such a good summary! This is exactly what a lot of parenting courses teach. Holding the boundary while connecting and offering empathy is so important for kids to feel safe.

finally someone who says something about the kids who don't want a hug. that's always the suggestion and my son SCREAMS if we offer a hug or suggest deep breaths. it leaves us kinda lost on how to comfort

Is there any issue with asking them to cry out quieter? :S often my 4yo cries/exclaims biiig feelings but they are so loud. I say it's ok to cry and feel your feelings, you let it out. Deeeep breath.

I LOVE your advice! How do you handle newly-potty trained toddlers? i.e., we have to get in the car, I know he hasn’t peed for 2 hours and we have an hour drive so he needs to go, but he refuses.

I don’t specifically practice RIE, but there is almost to a fault what I do with my current toddler (and in the past). A simple and clears heads up close to any transition, getting on their level

The only bit that I personally would adjust is saying “I’m sorry” because I want my son to know that he never needs to apologize for setting a boundary

this is great! I have a 14 month old & struggling to discipline him not to hit, throw things or bite. he doesn't seem to understand no and finds it funny if I raise my voice or look stern. any advice?
