A little over three years ago, Smokey came into my life. Since making a comeback into the industry I still get tons of people asking if I’ll work with their aggressive, dangerous horses as that was my specialty for a long time. In fact Wilde Child was created for those horses. It breaks my heart to turn them down - as I used to be the last chance for a lot of horses. But Smokey is the reason I no longer take these horses - and I don’t share his story very often. His owner brought home four unhandled stallions from the res, which wasn’t very smart and I should’ve declined right then and there. But I didn’t and eventually took over ownership of Smokey due to his behavioral challenges. I don’t remember what happened and probably never will, but he landed me in a coma with a fractured skull, broken back, and completely changed the trajectory of my life. I developed epilepsy, was stuck in a wheelchair for way too long, and almost three years later I still have issues sometimes. They never thought I’d walk again, much less ride and I almost gave up horses altogether. Smokey was eventually euthanized as we discovered he most likely had a neurological condition that we couldn’t quite fix. I still visit Smokey’s grave from time to time, and he’s actually the sire to sanctuary horse, Chaos. But to those of you who have aggressive horses that nobody else wants to touch - I hope this explains why I can’t be that last chance anymore. Maybe one day I’ll be able to train somebody up so Wilde Child can help those horses again, but in the meantime all I can do is work with the horses my body is capable of working with, educate, and raise awareness. Smokey taught me a lot of things, but most importantly that my life is not worth that one aggressive horse. May you rest in peace Smokey, and I’m sorry we couldn’t save you. #horsetrainer #equineprofessional #mustang #problemhorses #coltstarting #aggressivehorses #storytime #equineaccident #tbisurvivor #epilepsy
