for an etymology guy it's very strange to say Irish is weird with spellings, it's much more phonetically consistent for it's own alphabet than any other language. Shaun and Shawn are anglicised

Irish spelling isn't weird. It just doesn't have the letter J or the 'soft-g' sound so the J becomes S (like English sh) because the sounds are close. Pretty normal thing for languages to do.
