One of my biggest challenges in speech therapy has always been finding concrete ways to support Michael's speech production. Beyond traditional speech exercises and cueing techniques, I'm constantly exploring other indirect methods that could enhance his ability to produce sounds. And so, we re-introduced the harmonica we tried to have him engage in, 2 years ago. 🎼Blowing a harmonica is considered a respiratory and oral motor exercise. This type of activity is particularly beneficial for speech development as it helps strengthen the muscles involved in breathing and speech production. 👉🏻By playing the harmonica, Michael engages in controlled breathing and must coordinate the use of their lips, tongue, and cheeks, which are crucial for articulating sounds effectively. 👉🏻Additionally, harmonica playing can improve diaphragmatic control, which is essential for voice projection and speech clarity. This makes it a useful tool for enhancing both respiratory function and the precise motor skills needed for speaking. 🗣️To enhance speech motor planning abilities, I have been utilizing strategies that focus on improving the coordination and sequencing of muscle movements necessary for speech, such as Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST). 👉🏻Initially, I was unsure about its efficacy, but after incorporating a few exercises, I've seeing faster improvements in Michael's speech imitation compared to traditional methods alone. 👉🏻Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST) is a speech therapy technique specifically designed to improve speech motor control in individuals, particularly those with motor speech disorders like childhood #apraxia of #speech. 👉🏻This method emphasizes targeted practice that involves precise and rapid transitions between syllables in multisyllabic words or phrases, effectively enhancing speech fluidity and accuracy. 🔐 Now, the key aspects of ReST are structured and intensive sessions—two elements that don't work well for Michael. Therefore, I'm adapting what I've learned from ReST to fit our more flexible, lifestyle-oriented approach, incorporating sessions into real-life moments. This allows us to integrate the benefits of ReST while creating a therapeutic environment that is most effective for Michael. 👑 Daily approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 #heartwarming #sweet #cute #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage
