@blossomandbranchfarm: As a fellow former ballerina-turned-farmer i have many thoughts about all this recent controversy. I never want to speak for someone else and their experiences, but i do know this—while my dance career ended 5 years ago (hence my rusty technique) I’m grateful that it ended on my own terms. Ballet is all-encompassing. It’s not for the weak and it isn’t something you can do halfway. Most of those who make it anywhere close to a company position know the hours it takes to get there, and it’s not easy if you want to be a mom. Late-night stage calls, dress rehearsals, all day rehearsal and class, working weekends… not to mention the toll that motherhood takes on the body, and not just during pregnancy, but far afterward. I’ve actually met many people who used to dance and now farm. I’m not sure why it’s so common, but my personal reason was i wanted something to do where the attention wasnt on my body, for a change. Where it was a pressure unrelated to my weight or appearance and it was a welcome change after 6 years in a company. I wish the dance world were different but the nature of it is just so all-encompassing—i applaud those who are able to parent and dance. Both take so much commitment.
