My MIL got my kid a set of American Girl books for her birthday. Said kid was turning 5 and could not yet read. 🙃 (for anyone who doesn't know, AG books are written at a 3rd-4th grade level)

Not my mom, but older friends of ours bought my kid a bird for his 3rd birthday. Didn’t ask us. I’m kind of afraid of birds and would never have one for a pet. It went back to the store the next day.
