Nikki went missing in June 2019. Her remains were found in December 2019 in a remote area of Larch Mountain in Clark County, Washington. The discovery came after months of investigation and public concern over her whereabouts. David Bogdanov, a man Nikki had met and interacted with, was arrested and charged with her murder. The investigation revealed that after learning Nikki was transgender, Bogdanov became enraged and k*lled her. In August 2021, David Bogdanov was found guilty of second-degree murder and malicious harassment (a hate crime). He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The case garnered significant media attention and highlighted the dangers faced by transgender individuals, particularly transgender women of color. It also spurred advocacy and awareness efforts about transgender rights and protections.
