•Skull crushers that tie your hands to a fixed implement (barbells, smith, fixed machines etc.) are more offensive than skull crushers that do not, but either option done with a traditional intent is going to load the elbow and shoulder in a way that do not make sense for the goal. Even individuals that do have a capacity to rotate to and beyond the position I demonstrated still end up rotating away from it because of how unstable of a position that it is and how difficult it is to maintain under any degree of high efforts. •Cables make the most sense to use for most triceps variations because they allow for complete individualization of load direction and resistance profile relative to the positions you want to train. •Skull crushers are not “higher tension” than cable work. This is a common misconception that comes from looking at the weight we’re holding and feeling versus looking at a cable stack. Tension is determined by torque, which has a distance component, a force component, and a plane-specific component. In other words, there is much more to the equation of “tension” than the physical amount of load you’re lifting. Do not assume that because something is heaver that there are higher degrees of tension (a good example to visualize this is - although not analogous to this situation - is the person doing quarter squats with 500 pounds versus the person doing ass-to-grass paused reps with 225). •Just because a fixed bar skull crusher does not give you immediate pain or discomfort does not mean that it will not in the future.
