Hi, my kid had an iep that stipulated she have her own supplies do to her immunocompromised status during treatment for leukemia. I still bought the extra items that would clearly be used communally.

I used to work in sped law. We absolutely could use an IEP to get a kid to have their own stuff but in my experience more kids w executive functioning challenges benefited from communal supplies!

My son has a fine motor delay, so in 1st I talked to his teacher about bringing him special shaped pencils. She said cool. I brought in 2 packs in case they would benefit another child… 🤷🏻‍♀️

There is a growing number of people on this app who will call teachers talking about the struggles of the job “ableist” at the drop of a hat, even with 0 mention of neurodivergent children. It’s crazy

I’m convinced that some folks just collect boogeyman words and use them without really understanding what they mean.

Like…is she assuming that some kids use adaptive school supplies and they’re having them taken away?? I don’t understand.

ironically my undiagnosed ADHD childhood probably would have been easier if more of our supplies were communal lol

As a ND mom with a ND son.. we prefer communal supplies. Otherwise he would NEVER have a pencil. His ADHD just couldn't keep track of pencils.

Don’t most offices have communal supplies? 🤔 like we all share the same paper, pens, staples, folders, etc. I don’t see why school is so different.

People are saying “but IEPs are hard to get!” and they’re right, but also…talk to the teacher! If you say “hey, kiddo uses X special pencil” (or whatever) 99% of the time the teacher will be on board!

BINGO - my son writes easier with a pen due to gross/fine motor difficulties so he has an accommodation on his IEP for them. So that ONE item is his alone and the rest is communal…

Neurodivergent kiddos also typically like routine and sameness. If everyone is pulling out their blue folder and they have Mario Bros they’re going to feel outside the routine.

The ONLY thing that bums me out about collective supplies is that I just pay the school for the classroom's supplies rather than buying them myself. Which is cheaper! Because the school can get them in bulk! I just miss the dopamine of proper back to school shopping 😂

It teaches children how to share. I always explain that we do communal because some of my kids classmates may not be able to afford supplies, so we also pick up a few extras to help out as well.
