in mandarin they say “wei” for hello on the phone, you don’t really say it as a greeting in any other context

In Japanese they say Moshi Moshi as a greeting over the phone translating to "I'm going to talk" repeated. I didn't know that about hello

coming from a spanish speaking country, we greet each other with "hello" or "aló" over the phone, even if we will continue the call in our language. maybe this kind of explains that too

if signing off an email with "sincerely" comes from mimicking letters, does that make it a skeuomorphism

Are you sure that it stems from “to holler”? In German, you say “hallo” (pronounced like English hullo) and in French you say “allô” but neither language as a word similar to “to holler”.

Well I say ahoy when answering the phone, but that's only because my vocabulary is 50% nautical words. I don't know why.

hullo is said in the Lord of the rings, which I thought was a purposeful anachronism but ig tolkien probably just said that because he was born in 1892

in Greece we say mostly "ναι" wich means yes and "λέγεται" wich means you shall speak. "λέγεται" its the formal way to answer the phone and mostly its "λέγεται παρακαλώ" wich means you shall speak plz

my favourite related fact is that the "hello my baby" song was meant to kind of satirise this weird new greeting

It also explains why nobody says hello, “hey” isn’t a shortened version of hello it’s from other Germanic languages, hello also is related to Germanic hallo which Anglo-Saxon had hāl meaning health

I've heard this also happened with the way people say "Bueno" in Mexico. Literally trying to test if the connection was 'good'
