I work across the states & we talk about this. Ma'am & Sir are cultural. South=respect, North=sarcastic (similar to 'bless your heart'. When in Rome.

It’s because we’re not allowed to have a “gender”. I don’t deal with family or friends kids that don’t call me “ma’am”. A “yeah” or “what” sends my brain into the atmosphere. 👀😂

Respect is a lot more than just titles. Actions show respect. Saying yes officer or your honor comes from a place of fear not respect

Respect authority? No thank you. I'll teach them to respect goodness, kindness, truth & reason. I'll even teach them to fear authority when necessary. But authority doesn't deserve respect.
