Every day the team learns something new about our little guest. During this morning’s routine observations by DFOs Marine Mammal Response Unit, the footage of kʷiisaḥiʔis charging and eating a ball of bait fish was met with surprise. We have always wondered if she had been eating and there were early indications that she had grabbed a duck but the attempts at feeding seal were ignored until she was observed eating seal for the first time on Thursday. Since then the Team have been trying to keep a bit of closer watch on her to see if there are some behaviour changes, energy improvements or in differences in her body shape. Normally the Biggs killer whales are thought to eat only marine mammals like seals, sea lions and whales but this shows there is some flexibility in their diet of younger orcas. Today’s drone footage indicated that she was far more interested in the bait fish ball than the two sea birds that were there eating as well. While she didn’t eat much and she swam on after the second pass through before taking one of her regular long deep dives, this is another good sign that she is finding ways to sustain herself in the lagoon. Espanosa Inlet is a very rich ecosystem and there is always a lot going on which is why we see the whales in there from time to time. The Team will continue to monitor kʷiisaḥiʔis from the shore and by drone while the planning continues. The ultimate goal is her reunification with a family pod. Any news that shows she is eating means that she will be stronger when she is finally in a location where she can hear and be heard by her family and no one knows how long this will take. #firstnations #indigenous #indigenouspeople #canoeing #whalerescue #whalers #zeballos #westcoast #t109as #t109a3 #t109a3a #orca #kwiisahiis #biggswhales #transientorcas #bc #vancouverisland #nuuchahnulth #iihatis #ehattesaht #ehattesahtterritory #ehattesahtnation
