@slpmama_: Tips from a pediatric speech-language pathologist to help build your child’s language skills at home! Follow @slpmama_ for more 🫶 A strategy that we SLPs use, and I use often with my daughter, is called “expansions”. Language expansions are when you take what your child says and repeat it back adding more words using a grammatically correct sentence. In this clip she answered my question of “Who’s driving the car?” with “Elma and Duck” (aka Elmo and Big Bird lol). I then expanded her phrase to make it a complete thought “Elma and Duck are driving the car.” Language expansions not only help children use more words, thus expanding their utterance length, but also model correct grammar and sentence structure. Additionally, they provide added vocabulary models in a functional way. #speechlanguagepathology #tipsforparents #language #sesamestreet #elmo #childdevelopment #toddlerdevelopment #languagedevelopment
