On February 4, 2013, a long-running dispute between neighbors at a condominium complex in Dallas, Texas, ended in a double m*rder. 75-year-old Chung Kim lived below 31-year-old Michelle Jackson and 31-year-old Jamie Stafford. According to investigators, Kim had repeatedly complained about noise from the couple’s apartment and about waste from their dog allegedly falling from the upstairs balcony onto his patio below. The tension between the neighbors had reportedly been building for some time. Then one day, it turned deadly. Police said Kim shot Jackson near the upstairs balcony area before going upstairs toward the couple’s apartment. Stafford tried to escape through the back patio, but prosecutors said Kim followed him and shot him multiple times. Investigators said the shooting did not stop after Stafford fell. Jackson and Stafford were both k*lled. The couple had five children together. Four were at school at the time, while their newborn baby was reportedly inside the apartment and survived unharmed. Kim later claimed he had acted in self-defense and said Stafford pulled a gun first. He also said he had essentially blacked out during part of the confrontation. Prosecutors rejected that account. The case eventually went to trial, where Kim was convicted of capital m*rder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
