Do you have a tight jaw, or struggle with jaw tightening or holding?   The jaw acts as the GATEKEEPER of our emotions, our expression in general. Think of the feeling when you’re trying to hold in tears – our jaw, tongue, and throat clenches up, maybe we hold our breath, as a way to hold them back, hold it in. Over time, this leads to bound fascia, tightening and holding in the jaw, just as a general way of being in the world.   If we didn’t feel safe to express as kids, it’s likely we have some amount of holding/binding/constriction in our jaw. That’s what we’ve learned to do to hold in our emotions, hold in our voices. It can be some part of a freeze response to some kind of threat that is being held in the body, as well. Think about it as a brilliant adaptive move by your body to keep you safe - you weren’t allowed to express, so your body closed the gate of expression, the jaw holding, locking down to prevent it from happening.    Step one is just noticing. Noticing when you’re feeling a feeling and notice your jaw, notice if you feel any holding in general in jaw, notice when you go to sing and you feel unsure, or you’re maybe feeling unsafe to express in the space you’re in – notice the jaw.   Then when we feel safe enough, not in a triggered state, we can ask ourselves some questions: -When do you usually feel the jaw tighten? Is it when you go to sing? Feel a “big” feeling? Express a boundary, a preference, an emotion of some kind? -Are you afraid of bothering someone with your voice/expression? -Did you hold in your tears as a kid? Can you think of a time when you did that? -Can you see how this relates to your childhood and family environment as a kid? -How does this relate to singing for you? Does this happen in performance? In your lessons? At home alone? Let me know if any of this lands! Look out for part two and three - self-massage techniques and singing exercises to help bring more awareness and releasing/softening to the jaw. #singing #singingteacher #learntosing #learntosingbetter #singer #singbetter #singbetternow #singbetterthanever #reparenting #cptsdrecovery #tmjtreatment #tmjpain #singingteachersofinstagram #fyp #fypage #foryourpagе #singingteachersofitiktok #traumatok #singingtok #voiceteachersoftiktok
