Installing an under deck drainage system to my roof top deck on my container house! This installation maybe a bit confusing for some as it’s not common practice for a deck build however that’s because a deck usually isn’t on top of the roof of your house. 😆 The purpose of my under deck drainage system is to divert the rainwater that will fall on the deck away from the container roof so I can collect it and use it for the gardens on my homestead. ⛲️🪴 You’re probably thinking but you have a skillion roof over the deck Jas? 🛖 I do have a roof however it is an open deck and even with the roof over it, the volume and the power of the rain I experience in my area has proved to get in right under the majority of the deck area 🌧️ I found this out through the little spring and summer rain storms I’ve been experiencing here at the homestead and even though the under deck area itself will be almost closed in (there needs to be slight gaps to allow for airflow to assist with insulation and condensation) the rain will still fall beneath the decking 💧 Winter lasted for 7 months this year with non stop rain and no sun which means the rain will sit on the container roof and eventually create holes as it did this winter after a few short months 🕳️ That would mean water getting inside the roof and walls of my container house and I’m not a huge fan of mould so for my house to stand the test of time a drainage system needs to be installed and this was the cheapest option 💰 The drainage system not only diverts water away from the container roof but it also allows me to catch the water and utilise it to use for my gardens 🧑‍🌾 I am using a rubber lining to create channels in between the joists for the water to run down into a down spout and then into gutters to be collected 🚿 The drainage system is not complete as I still need to add the gutters and last liners but now that I’ve got the materials I can finish it off and get started on milling the timber for my decking boards 🪵 I have also applied 3 coats of waterproof membrane to the tops of each container as added protection ⛑️
