For over 40 years, fans believed Edwards was aggressively chewing gum during his close-ups due to his intense jaw movement. In 2026, Siedah Garrett clarified what actually happened: the director noticed his frantic jaw clenching and asked him to spit out his gum into a piece of paper, to which Edwards repeatedly shouted back, "I ain't got no gum!"—confirming he was simply under the influence during the shoot.
