I agree with all the comments saying he should look into OCD. I have OCD and the way he's fixating on this sounds very similar to how I react to my OCD themes.

I agree w/ the OCD theory. He has to move away & mourn the "break up" so he can start to move on. It's hard when u don't know anything else. There's a better life out there, just gotta make that leap!

At least he understands it’s not right. My ex was very much the same but didn’t realize it. He was not just “a mama’s boy”, his entire life revolved around her. Much to my detriment, and honestly his.
